Set up Thomson TG585

Find the the Thomson TG585 modem user guides and troubleshooting information. Find out how to do factory reset as well as change passwords and network names.

User guide

Access the modem's web interface

You can manage your modem's settings by signing in to its web interface.

  1. Open your web browser, eg, Internet Explorer.
  2. In your browser's address bar, type in 192.168.1.254.
  3. Select Enter.
  4. Type in your username. The default is Administrator.
  5. Type in your password. If you haven't signed in before, leave this field blank.

Change the network name (SSID)

  1. Sign in to the modem's web interface.
  2. Select Wireless from under Home network.
  3. Select Configure in the top-right corner.
  4. Type in the network name (SSID) you'd like to use.
  5. Select Apply.

Change the modem's password

  1. Sign in to the modem's web interface.
  2. Select Toolbox.
  3. Select User management.
  4. Select Change my password under Pick a task.
  5. Leave the Old password field blank. Type a new password and then type it again to confirm.
  6. Select Change password.

Factory reset modem

Reset via the reset button

  1. Use a paper clip to push the reset button on the back panel of the modem.
  2. Hold down for five to 10 seconds.
  3. Release when the power light turns red.

Reset via the modem interface

  1. Sign in to the modem's web interface.
  2. Select Thomson gateway from the main menu.
  3. Select Configuration.
  4. Under Pick a task, select either:
    • Reset my Thomson gateway (TG585v8)
    • Return to factory default settings (TG585v7)
  5. Resetting the modem will take around a minute.

WiFi protected set-up (WPS)

The WPS button is on the front of the modem. You can use it to connect to WiFi without having to enter security information. Press the button to connect nearby items. The colour of the button will show the connection status:

  • Solid green: The connection was successful.
  • Blinking orange: WPS is still connecting.
  • Blinking red: An error occurred.

Check the broadband connection

  1. Sign in to the modem's web interface.
  2. Select Broadband connection from the top menu.
  3. Select DSL connection.
  4. If DSL is working, you'll see how long the connection has been running under DSL Connection. You'll also see DSL connect rates under Bandwidth.
  5. Under Broadband connection, select Internet services.
  6. If broadband is working, you'll see how long it's been running under Internet services.

Change the ADSL profile

If you're getting no DSL connection, please check:

  • You have a dial tone on your landline.
  • You're using filters and:
    • Have replaced the filter.
    • Have tested the modem on the jackpoint without a filter.
    • Have tested the modem on a different jackpoint.

Change your broadband settings

  1. Sign in to the modem's web interface.
  2. Select Thomson Gateway.
  3. Select Set up my Thomson gateway under Pick a task.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Select Routed PPP and select Next.
  6. Select the following options:
    • Select ADSL for DSL modulation.
    • Select 0.100 for VPI/VCI.
    • Select PPP over ATM (PPPoA) for Connection type.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Type in your username and password.
  9. Select Next.
  10. Select Start.

Parental controls

Check if Parental control is on

  1. .Sign in to the modem's web interface.
  2. Select Toolbox from the left menu.
  3. Under Parental control:
    • If Address filtering says Disabled, Parental control is off.
    • If Address filtering says Enabled, Parental control is on.

Set up Parental control

  1. Sign in to the modem's web interface.
  2. Select Parental control under Toolbox.
  3. Select Configure from the top-right corner.
  4. Select Use address based filter.
  5. Make sure that Actions for unknown sites is set to Allow.
  6. Type in the website you want to block.
  7. Select Block under Action.
  8. Select Add.
  9. Select Apply.
