1. Go to Spark Security Suite
  2. Enter your Xtra Username and Password
  3. Click Download Now
  4. Click Visit McAfee to download the Spark Security Suite components
  5. Click Next on the registration page
  6. Click Yes if your are prompted by a Security Information box
  7. Click Download
  8. Click I Agree if you accept the EULA
  9. Copy or make a note of your Serial Number and click Download
  10. Click Run in the following Security Boxes
  11. Enter your Serial Number when downloaded and click Next
  12. Select the Custom Option and Next
  13. Select the Components to install and Next
  14. Click Next if prompted to update your subscription details
  15. Click Restart

    • During the process, click Next if you get a UAC box in Windows 7 or Vista

  16. Select Send Anonymous Usage Information to McAfee if desired
  17. Click Next if prompted to Turn on Windows Firewall
  18. Click Finish

The Spark Security Centre will now be installed and its icon will appear in the System tray.

  1. Uninstall Sprk Security Suitename
    Select your operating system:

    Windows 7 and Vista

    1. Close all McAfee program windows
    2. Click Start
    3. Click Search
    4. Type Programs and Features
    5. Click Go
    6. Double-click Programs and Features
    7. Select McAfee Security Center
    8. Click Uninstall, and follow any on-screen prompts
    9. When McAfee is completely uninstalled, restart your computer

    Windows XP

    1. Click Start
    2. Click Settings
    3. Click Control Panel
    4. Double-click Add or Remove Programs
    5. Select McAfee Security Center
    6. Click Remove, and follow any on-screen prompts
    7. When McAfee is completely uninstalled, restart your computer

  2. Run the McAfee Removal Tool
    1. Run the McAfee Removal Tool to remove all traces of the program. Download it at http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
    2. Click on Run
    3. Once launched, follow the on-screen instructions.
    4. Once finished, restart your computer
    5. Open your web browser
    6. Once you are connected to the Internet, you can now reinstall Spark Security Suite
    Stop here if you do not want to reinstall Spark Security Suitename. We do highly recommend you have some security software on your computer, however.

  3. Reinstall Spark Security Suitename
    1. Go to the Premium Services download page
    2. Enter User Name and Password
      If you don't know these, try resetting your username and password at spark.co.nz/changepassword and try again.
    3. Click Download now 
    4. Click OK 
    5. Click Visit McAfee to download the Spark Security Suite components 
    6. Click Next 
    7. Click Download 
    8. Click I Agree 
    9. Click Download 
    10. Click Run & continue with the installation 
      The next options will vary depending on your software and the options you wish to choose.
    11. After the installation has completed, restart your computer
    12. Open your web browser

If you have McAfee software which is not Spark Security Suitename, follow the McAfee Fix Instructions on McAfee's website.

You can configure the Spark Security Suite to control what type of websites can be viewed using the Parental Controls.

  1. Open the Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Parental Controls
  3. Click Set for Administrator Password if it hasn't been configured

    •  Enter the Password, confirm and enter the password hint, then click Next

  4. Click Edit for Protect Your Family and enter the password 
  5. Click Protect next to the User's Profile to configure
  6. Select the user's age

    • Available options: Under 5, 6-8 , 9-12, 13-15, 16-18 years or Custom 

  7. Use the left-hand [<<] and right-hand arrows [>>] to select which types of website to Allow or Block
  8. Click Optional Settings
  9. Select Block websites that contain potentially inappropriate images... if desired 
  10. To block a particular website (e.g. thepiratebay.org), enter it into Website Address and select Block
  11. Click Add
  12. Click Done when finished

  1. Open Spark Security Suite by double-clicking the M icon in the task bar  
  2. Click Parental Controls  
  3. Click Configure  
  4. Click Advanced 
    Note: If you are logged into an account with limited user rights, this button will not be available
  5. Select the Windows User Account to configure  
  6. Click Edit
  7. Type in the website that you would like to allow or block  
  8. Click on either Allow or Block
    Note: The website will now appear in the Allowed or Blocked list 
  9. Click Done

Note: We recommend that you keep Automatic Updates turned on to ensure that your version of Spark Security Suite remains up to date.

  1. Open Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Updates: Current 
  3. Click Settings on the right-hand side
  4. Ensure that Download and install updates automatically is selected
  5. Click Apply and OK to save any changes

Note: We recommend that you keep Automatic Updates turned on to ensure that your version of Spark Security Suite remains up to date.

  1. Open Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Updates: Current 
  3. Click Settings on the right-hand side
  4. Ensure that Download and install updates automatically is selected
  5. Click Apply and OK to save any changes

You can set the Spark Security Suite to control Internet access for programs installed on your computer.

  1. Click Firewall on the Spark Security Suite's home page
  2. Click Settings on the right-hand side
  3. Click Internet Connections for Programs
  4. Click any program
  5. Click Edit
  6. Select Block or Allow under Access
  7. Click Save
  8. Repeat steps 4 to 6 as desired

  1. Open the Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Internet & Network
  3. Click Configure
  4. Click Advanced under Firewall Protection
  5. Click Program Permissions in the left-hand menu
  6. Select the program under Program Permissions
  7. Select an Action from the following list:

    • Allow Access
    • Allow Outbound-Only Access
    • Block Access
    • Remove Program Permission
    • Learn More

  8. The Program Name will now be updated under Permissions in the top window
  9. Click OK

Running a scan is part of the normal routine of Spark Security Suite and is done to find viruses or other malicious software on your computer. We recommend you run a system as soon as possible after installation.

  1. Open Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Real-Time Scanning
  3. Click on the Scan your PC link on the right
  4. Select:
    • Run a quick scan: to quickly check the most susceptible areas of your PC
    • Run a full scan: to thoroughly check your PC (We recommend you do this overnight as it can take several hours depending on how much data you have on your computer.)
    • Run a custom scan: to check locations and file types that you care about the most
  5. Click Done when finished

To stop the scan, select View Scan in Progress in step 3 and click Cancel.

Alternatively:

  1. Right-click the McAfee Security Center icon in your task bar (next to the Time on your Desktop)
  2. Highlight Run a scan and select Full, Quick or Custom

To stop, right-click the McAfee Security Center icon, highlight Scan and select Cancel or Pause.

  1. Open Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Firewall: On
  3. Click the Settings link on the right
  4. Click Security Levels
  5. Select the level of protection you prefer and click Apply
  6. Click Apply

  1. Open Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Parental Controls
  3. Click the Parental Controls link 
  4. Click Edit for Protect Your Family
    • If this not available, you will need to set an Administrator Password
  5. Enter your Password
  6. Click Online Schedule
  7. Select I want to choose when my child can go online
  8. Highlight the schedule as desired and click Done   
  9. Click OK to save

Online Schedule will now show as being Restricted under Protection Status.

Turning on the Firewall will increase internet security - and may also be required as part of troubleshooting internet data transfer issues

  1. Open Spark Security Suite (Double click the icon in the corner or in the Start Menu)
  2. Select Fix
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select Turn on

The Firewall will now be on, leaving you free to close Spark Security Suite

  1. Open Spark Security Suite
  2. Click on the View Details link at the bottom of the main page
  3. Installed components will be listed, with a drop down arrow next to each heading which you click on to show you the version number of each component module. The component modules and versions to date are:
    • SecurityCenter v7.2 build 7.2.151
    • Virus Scan v11.2 build 11.2.125
    • Personal Firewall v8.2 build 8.2.122
    • Privacy Service v9.2 build 9.2.128

  1. Open Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Firewall
  3. Click Settings on the right-hand side 
  4. Click Restore Defaults

If you have any issues viewing webpages or checking email, turning off the Real-Time scanning or Firewall is a good way to check if the Spark Security Suite is blocking your access to the internet. If you are still unable to send email or browse after disabling these components, you may have a third party application installed on your computer that is causing a conflict.  

Note: We do not recommend turning off the Spark Security Suite's components for any length of time. These steps are provided as a means of troubleshooting internet issues.

Enable/Disable Real-Time Scanning

  1. Open the Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Real-Time Scanning: On
  3. Click the Real-Time Scanning settings link on the right
  4. Click Turn off
  5. Select when you want to resume Real-Time Scanning and Turn Off

To resume real-time scanning, click Turn On and Done in step 4.

Enable/Disable the Firewall

  1. Open the Spark Security Suite
  2. Click Firewall: On
  3. Click the Settings link on the right
  4. Click Turn off
  5. Select when you want to resume Firewall and Turn Off

To resume Firewall, click Turn On and Done in step 4.

If you are an existing Spark Security Suite customer you can sign-up for additional licenses online. Click on Security on the Premium Services site and complete the following steps:

  1. Click Maintain on the right-hand side under Security Suite
  2. Enter your User Name and Password
  3. Click Visit McAfee to download Spark Security Suite
  4. Click Next

Download Now

It is recommended that you turn Windows Firewall off before installing Spark Security Suite.

Use the following guide for your Operating System:

Windows 7

  1. Click Start
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Click System and Security (not required in Icon View)
  4. Open Windows Firewall
  5. Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off in the left-hand menu
  6. Select Turn On Windows Firewall or Turn off Windows Firewall  (not recommended) and click OK
  7. Close the Windows Firewall page

Windows Vista

  1. Click Start
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Click Security (not required in Classic View)
  4. Open Windows Firewall
  5. Click Change Settings
  6. Select On (recommended) or Off (not recommended) and click OK
  7. Close the Windows Firewall page

Windows XP

  1. Click Start
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Click Security Center (not required in Classic View)
  4. Open Windows Firewall
  5. Select On (recommended) or Off (not recommended) and click OK
  6. Close Windows Security Center
  1. Go to http://www.spark.co.nz/security
  2. Click Maintain Security Suite Subscription in the window on the right of the page
  3. Log in with your Xtra Username and Password 
  4. Click Cancel the service 
  5. Click Confirm 
  6. Click OK

Note: If you cancel the Spark Security Suite halfway through your billing cycle, a pro rata credit will appear on your next Spark bill, since we charge for a month in advance.

 

 

When you can connect but can't get access to webpages or email, your problem could be a faulty/misconfigured antivirus or firewall. If you are not sure whether McAfee Personal Firewall Plus is installed as part of the Spark Security Suite, follow the steps below to check.

Windows 7 and Vista

  1. Click Windows
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Open Programs and Features
  4. Look for the McAfee Security Suite in the Programs List

Windows XP

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Open Add or Remove Programs
  4. Look for the McAfee Security Suite in the Programs List

Windows 95/98/ME/2000

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Settings and select Control Panel
  3. Open Add/Removed Programs
  4. Look for the McAfee Security Suite in the Programs List

Note: Do NOT use the system tray to check if you have a firewall running, as this is not an effective test.
