What happens with fibre installation?

There are now several ways to connect fibre so installation is easier than ever before. Once you've ordered fibre, your Local Fibre Company will be in touch to make an appointment. Along the way, if there are any issues you can call our dedicated Spark Fibre Customer Care team.

There's a simple 3 steps process we follow:

Assess: At this appointment the LFC will assess your property and you'll discuss and agree any work required to connect fibre from the street to your house. They won't move to the next phase unless you are happy with what is proposed.

Build: This is the next phase. The LFC team come back for any physical work that's required. It could be mounting the fibre cable to a fence, digging a trench for it or running it in as an overhead cable. (You will have discussed this in the 'assess' meeting).

Connect: The final step. An LFC technician sets up the fibre equipment and sorts out any wiring outside and inside the house. They'll also test the connection and make sure you're good to go. In lots of cases, Build and Connect happen at the same time.

How much faster is VDSL broadband?

Heaps faster than ADSL! Depending on your line quality, you could get download speeds of up to 70Mbps and upload speeds up to 10Mbps. There are a number of factors involved such as the condition of the copper cables and the distance from the nearest cabinet. The closer you are to the cabinet – the better.

Should I choose VDSL or Ultra Fast Fibre? (Ultra Fast Broadband)

If you can get both at your address then you should consider fibre. It uses fibre optic cabling instead of copper which means the speeds are more consistent and faster. Fibre is a little trickier to install than VSDL, but it’s worth it.

Is it easy to install VDSL and how much does it cost?

It’s super easy! When you order VDSL you can let us know the date and time you'd like to have it connected. It will require a technician to visit your property to install a master splitter and new master jack point in your home. Don’t worry – it may sound complicated but it’s not and should only take 1-2 hours. You’ll need to be at home during this time to make sure you’re happy with what’s going on.

We have a range of VDSL plans and when you sign up to a 12 month contract standard installation and a top-spec modem is free too.

Do I need a new modem?

We’ll send you a high spec compatible Wi-Fi modem before the installation date and you'll need to have this on hand when the work starts. The modem will then be connected to the new VDSL jack point. So ideally, the jack point and modem should be installed where you'll make most use of the internet; for example, next to a centrally located TV for game consoles or in an office for desktop computers.

What if my speed isn’t any faster than ADSL?

Once VDSL has been installed, a technician will fine-tune the new service. While this is going on there could be some variability in how your connection performs. After 10 days, if the speed is not consistently better than 15Mbps download, and we aren't able to improve things, you can switch back to standard ADSL at no extra charge or penalty.

30 Day money back network guarantee

We're so confident you'll love the quality of Spark Home Superfast Wireless Broadband network connection, there's even a 30 day money back network guarantee in case you don't. Spark does not guarantee that the service can be supplied at a particular location. In the event that service is not available at your location, you can return your Spark Wireless Modem to Spark within 30 days of receiving the Spark Wireless Modem for a full refund of the purchase price and first month's access fees (excludes purchases of additional data).

How does the 30 day money back network guarantee work?

If you aren't 100% happy with your signal strength, contact us and arrange to return your modem in its original packaging and in as-new condition to receive a full refund of the modem cost and any plan fee you paid. FYI the refund does not include out of plan charges such as additional data purchases. Our 30 day money back network guarantee doesn't affect any rights or remedies you may have under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

Return the modem to us in the channel it was purchased. It must be in good condition, in original boxes, and with all paperwork, parts and accessories to ensure full credit.

You can only use the Money Back Guarantee once at a given address. If you’ve moved to a different address within the Superfast Wireless Broadband Coverage area, you will be eligible to use the Money Back Network Guarantee again at the new address, proving you have notified us of the move to the new address.

Criteria for the 30 day money back guarantee:
  • No connection possible
  • Inconsistent connection (only works on some days)
  • Limited speed performance
  • You’re using it at the address you ordered for (the installed location)

Note: Only the the base plan cost and the cost of the modem (if not on a 12 month contract) will be refunded. We will not refund overage, additional data purchases, or chargeable calls that are made in addition to the base plan cos.

Why are some customers in 4G areas not eligible for a Wireless service?

To ensure broadband performance and network consistency remain at their optimal levels, Spark may monitor 4G capacity in certain areas to ensure customers are always receiving the best possible service. This may mean Spark has to restrict capacity in some areas at certain times for new customers, particularly if the area is becoming congested.

How many devices can I connect to my Spark Modem?

You can connect as many devices (e.g. computers, tablets, laptops and smartphones) as you want to your modem. Certain devices may use different technologies which will affect the speed. For instance an older device with a slower processor will be slower than a newer device. What you are actually doing on the device will also affect the speed. The more devices you have using your connection at the same time, the harder the modem works to deliver broadband.

How fast are the Ultra Fibre plans?

With Ultra Fibre 30, the service has the ability to deliver Fibre speeds up to 30mbps downstream and 10mbps upstream. Ultra Fibre 100 has the ability to deliver Fibre speeds up to 100mbps downstream and 20mbps upstream. Ultra Fibre 200 can provide 200Mbps downstream and 20Mbps upstream. Ultra Fibre Gigatown can provide an amazing 1000Mbps downstream and 500Mbps upstream (only available in Dunedin).

Actual speeds will be affected by various factors including NZ and overseas networks, your modem and computer technology, internal home wiring and other environmental factors.

Standard Fibre installation

Sign-up on a 12 month contract and we'll do this for free. There's also a no-contract option which costs $299 for the installation and the Ultra Fibre modem.

The standard fibre installation should suit most New Zealand homes and requires a technician from your Local Fibre Company to carry out work at your house. They will make sure you understand what's required and won't start any work unless you're happy with what's proposed.

It includes all the work needed to connect your home to the fibre running down the street:

  • Installing the fibre cable from the street through to your home (up to 200m of cabling from roadside curb to house).
  • Installing and connecting the necessary equipment outside (the ETP) and inside (the ONT) your home.
  • Making sure the fibre service is running and disconnecting the copper broadband connection to your home.
  • Your Local Fibre Company staff will do their best to minimise any impact on grassed areas and if hard surfaces are affected, they will be resealed.

Non-standard installation

You'll need this if your house is more than 200m from the Fibre access point on the street. Or if you decide to install your fibre modem in a different place from the ONT and need additional wiring as a result.

The Local Fibre Company staff will let you know if your place needs a non-standard installation and what that's likely to cost before they start any work.

If you require your fibre landline service to be connected to your existing premise wiring and jackpoints you will need to stipulate this when you order the service. This will allow you to continue to use any devices that are connected to the home jackpoints such as extra phones monitored alarms, faxes, and set top boxes. This cost to do this wiring work is $49.

What if I have a monitored alarm or other analogue devices that use a phone line?

When we connect you to Fibre we will disconnect your copper phone line (if you have one) and replace it with a fibre based phone service (or no phone service if you go Naked).

This will affect the functionality of services such as medical and monitored alarms, faxes or set top boxes that use the existing copper phone connection to communicate, so please make sure any equipment is compatible with a Fibre landline by contacting the manufacturer or arranging for a test call to be made before the copper is disconnected.

How does scheduling my installation work?

We will submit your desired appointment date and time to the Local Fibre Company who will perform the installation. If this date/time is not possible we will let you know and request a new appointment. The installer usually arrives between 8am and 11am and you will need to be home on the day you choose.

Getting the installation work done

You may need to allow a full day for the work to be done and you'll also need to be available on-site as the installation team will be working both inside and outside of your home.

Don't worry though. The installation team will make sure you understand what's required and they won't start any work unless you are happy with what's being proposed.

Equipment

There are three pieces of equipment you need installed at your home:

  • External Termination Point (ETP) - this will likely to be installed next to the current copper external termination point, which is typically outside your house.
  • Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The ONT is another small box, but this time it's attached to a wall inside your house. It's the place where you'll plug in your new modem, its also where your fibre landline will be connected. There are a number of considerations as to what the best location will be for the ONT. These include access to power points, whether you wish to continue to use your existing phone wiring for fibre landline therefore requiring proximity to an existing jackpoint. For internet use where you'll make most use of the internet, perhaps near a centrally located TV or computer. The installation team will discuss these options with you.
  • A fibre WiFi modem - we will courier you the modem before the installation, so you'll just need to have it to hand when the work starts.

Ducting on your property

If your house was built after 1987 and has underground ducting, there's a good chance the ducting which carries your current phone line can also be used to carry a new Fibre connection.

If the house was built before 1987 it's more likely to need new ducting. This means a trench will need to be dug to install the ducting. The trench may be dug by the Local Fibre Company, or they may ask for you to organise this yourself. This will be determined at the time of the install. Installers will do their best to minimise the impact on any grass areas and if hard surfaces are affected they will be resealed. Local Fibre Companies have said they will also attempt to reinstate these areas to the previous standard but this is not guaranteed; especially where specific hard services are used (e.g. matching concrete patina, paving stones).

Renting / Multi Dwelling Units / Right of ways

If you're renting the property, live in an apartment, unit or in a subdivision where you share the title with other properties, or if you live somewhere where Fibre needs to go over someone else's land to get to your property from the street we may ask you for extra information. If they need to dig a trench, the Local Fibre Company will need to gain permission from all of affected landowners. They will provide all of the necessary paperwork if it's required though.

Things to think about before installation

Ideally these should go in a central room close to a powerpoint, in a central location for good wifi coverage and close to a jackpoint if you wish to continue to use your premise wiring for fibre landline.   • Connecting your fibre, wifi modem, fibre landline and checking to see that you can get online.

Who are the Local Fibre Companies?

There are four Local Fibre Companies (LFCs) rolling out fibre across New Zealand: Chorus, North Power, Ultra Fast Fibre and Enable.

Can you tell me a little more about what impacts speed?

The Fibre network, like broadband over ADSL, is shared with other properties within your Local Fibre Company (LFC) and Retail Service Provider (RSP) networks. Speeds will vary depending on how many people are on the network at the same time both in your house and in general on the Internet. This is also true for overseas networks when accessing content, such as websites or streaming video. Content such as web pages and videos are stored on 'content servers' so you can access them via your internet connection. Content servers within New Zealand and overseas can reduce the rate (bandwidth) at which you access their content (for instance, when they are very busy), this affects the time it takes to download content and thus your speed. If connecting via WiFi the connection can be impacted by environmental factors like other wireless devices in the house (such as mobile or digital phones) and even your neighbours' WiFi connection. The speed capacity of the devices you are connecting with may be a limitation, for instance the age of their WiFi adapter. Other hardware and software components can also limit the processing of bandwidth and thus your speed. The most reliable connection and faster speeds will be achieved by connecting devices directly to your modem via high-speed Ethernet wiring instead of using WiFi. For example, Cat 5e is a high-quality network cable, designed to deliver Ethernet standard services over short distances at speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Availability

Broadband is not available in all areas. Factors such as distance from our equipment or the network's capacity, means we may be unable to deliver Spark Broadband to a specific address.

Sometimes further checks are required before we can know if you can get Spark Broadband. In some situations, for example with complex Fibre installations, we will not be able to confirm whether you can get Spark Broadband until we, our contractors or agents have commenced installation. For this reason and the other reasons set out here we do not guarantee service until installation is complete and your connection line has been tested.

Data allowance

If you exceed your monthly allowance you will be charged in data blocks of 5GB each at $5 up to a maximum of $50 at which point you will receive no extra data charges until your next billing cycle.

Unlimited data customers don't have to worry about what to do when they reach their data allowance, because they don't have a data cap.

Speeds

Upstream and downstream speeds are based on a theoretical maximum, and actual speeds will be affected by various factors including NZ and overseas networks, your modem and computer technology, internal home wiring and other environmental factors.

Calling costs and plans

Our broadband + landline plans require you to have your broadband, landline and toll calling all with Spark.

National calling

Applies to direct dial voice calls from your home line to landlines in New Zealand, all calls are for up to 2 hours, after 2 hours you will be charged 24c per minute. Excludes calling cards 059, 0161, premium numbers (0900 and any International equivalent), calls made via Home 0800 or International 0800.

Mobile calling

Applies to calls made to standard New Zealand mobiles and calls for up to 2 hours, after 2 hours you will be charged 0.39c per minute. Does not include calls to mobiles of overseas visitors roaming in New Zealand.

Fair Use Policy

Fair Use Policy applies on the Weekend National and Mobile calling plan. View the policy.

Naked Broadband

Naked Broadband means you no longer have a landline. This means if you used to have a home phone, it will stop working and you will not be able to use it to call 111 emergency services. As such we strongly recommend that you consider keeping a back-up device, such as a charged mobile phone, for emergencies.

If you currently have an active landline phone any features such as voicemail and caller display will be deactivated when you change to Naked Broadband.

Services that use a landline phone line, such as medical alerts, monitored home alarms, faxes, the interactive features of SKY digital or PABXs are incompatible with Naked Broadband.

Contract terms

Charging for Spark Broadband starts once your service is connected to our network. Please be aware you need to let us know 30 days in advance if you wish to cancel this service (these services). If you change or remove your plan or package within 30 days you will still be charged for the full month.

12-month contracts

A 12 month contract applies for a free modem and standard fibre connection for residential customers.

If you choose to sign up with Spark Broadband on a 12 month contract, and your service is disconnected before the completion of that minimum contract period, you will be charged an early termination fee of $199 if you have ADSL or Wireless Broadband, or $299 if you have VDSL or Fibre Broadband.

If you move house no early termination fee applies, provided you connect Spark broadband at your new house. You may also be asked to enter into a new broadband contract for 12 months. 6-month contracts

If you choose to sign up for ADSL Broadband, you have the option of a 6 month contract. This includes a free standard connection, but you’ll need to supply your own modem.

If your service is disconnected before the completion of that minimum contract period, you will be charged an early termination fee of $99.

No-term contracts

When you sign up with Spark Broadband you may be offered a no-term contract. You will not have to pay an early termination fee under this contract.

Please be aware you need to let us know 30 days in advance if you wish to cancel this service (these services). If you change or remove your package within 30 days you will still be charged for the full month.

Online billing

Spark is moving to online billing, so we ask that you ensure you are set up for an online bill when you sign-up for broadband.
