What is 5G?
5G is the fifth generation of our existing mobile connectivity. That's the connectivity that provides data, internet and voice services to our mobile phones when we're out and about, as well as wireless broadband (WBB) services.
How does 5G work?
5G works the same way garage door openers, TVs, baby monitors and every past generation of wireless have all worked — with radiofrequency (RF) waves.
How is 5G different to all the other 'G's'?
5G is faster and carries more data than previous generations (4G, 3G, 2G and so on). It has the potential to bring super-fast downloads, minimal latency, massive connectivity and outstanding reliability. It will open up huge possibilities for business and the way we live, but the underlying technology is the same. 5G has the potential to reach download speeds of up to 100 times faster than 4G.
Is 5G safe?
Yes, it is. 5G is simply the next generation of mobile technology, which has been used by New Zealanders since the introduction of the mobile phone in 1987. Claims that 5G is dangerous are not supported by mainstream scientists and to date, no adverse health effect has been causally linked with exposures to wireless technologies that comply with the New Zealand limits.
