If you're not a Spark Wireless broadband customer you can buy a Spark Smart Modem 2 from any Spark store for $349.

We've equipped some Spark modems with remote testing capabilities. This technology tests the quality of our customers' internet connections. We'll use this data to gain a better understanding of how our customers’ internet connections are performing and the things we can do to improve our broadband services.

Is my connection being tested?

The tests are being rolled out for Spark Smart Modem 2 and Spark 5G Smart Modems used by customers on Wireless Broadband plans. If you're a Wireless Broadband customer with one of these modems, you don't need to do anything. Once the software is installed, you won't notice anything different about your connection.

How do the tests work?

The tests check metrics relating to how your internet connection is performing. They measure data such as, your connection’s download and upload speeds, latency, and whether your connection is dropping data.

The tests don't collect information about how you are using your internet connection or the websites, applications or platforms that you access with it. These tests will only run when you’re not using your broadband connection.

What technology is being used to run these tests?

Spark is using software from SamKnows to run the tests. SamKnows is a trusted global leader in speed testing and internet performance analysis, providing reliable data on internet connection metrics. They allow organisations like Spark to make informed decisions on how to improve internet connectivity.

SamKnows software is already being used by the New Zealand Commerce Commission as part of the Measuring Broadband New Zealand programme.

If you have a Wireless Broadband plan using a Spark Smart Modem 2 or 5G Smart Modem, you can use SamKnows RealSpeed to test your broadband speed. You'll find it at samknows.com/realspeed

Spark Smart Modem 3

Simple to use, seamless to connect. Smart Modem 3 is equipped with WiFi 6 technology, offering fast speeds and a secure connection.

Compatible with Spark Fibre, ADSL and VDSL connections.
