What is Spotify Premium?

Spotify Premium gives you all the music you'll ever need. Play the songs you love instantly on your phone, without ads. You can even take your tunes offline, so your music is always with you.

Where can I go to download the Spotify Premium app?

Simply go to Google Play Store or the Apple App Store from your mobile or desktop and download the Spotify app. It's that simple!

Why use Spotify's Premium service instead of the Free version?

The premium Spotify service has significant advantages over the free service. On Spotify Premium, subscribers can experience uninterrupted listening (by that we mean no ads), they can play any song on demand (the free version only allows shuffle-play), download playlists or albums, select their music listening quality and listen offline so they're not consuming data from their data plan.

What if I'm already on Spotify and/or Spotify Premium?

No worries. You can keep your username and primo playlists – just get your included upgrade on us at www.spark.co.nz/getspotify if you have an eligible plan.

I've heard Spark offers Spotify Premium, how can I get it?

If you've never had Spotify Premium before, and you signed up for an eligible Spark mobile plan, then you can add a new Spotify Premium subscription and enjoy it for free from your plan activation date. Just click here, to get activated with Spark.

If you're currently a Spotify Premium customer, and you signed up for an eligible Spark mobile plan, you can also enjoy Spotify Premium on us! And don't worry, you won't lose any of your playlists. Just click here, to get activated with Spark. At step 3, we'll ask you to log in to your account, so that we can start picking up the bill.

Before we can start covering your Spotify Premium bill each month, you'll need to cancel your payments. Cancelling your Premium account payments can feel a bit weird; here's how it works:

During the activation process (step 3), we'll ask you if you already have a Spotify Premium account. If you select yes, we'll ask you to log in to Spotify to cancel your payments.

Spotify doesn't know that you're switching to Spotify Premium with Spark, they think you're leaving them. They may ask you a few times if you're sure you want to cancel, which can feel a bit scary. Rest assured, as long as you've been through the activation process at spark.co.nz/getspotify and registered your account with Spark, we'll pick up the tab when your Premium Account tries to renew at your normal renewal date.

You won't get a confirmation SMS when this happens, but you will be able to check that Spark are covering your bill under your Account Overview in Spotify. It will look like this:

I'm already a Spotify Premium customer. How do I cancel my payments so Spark can take over?

If you're already a Spotify Premium customer you can use your existing account for our Free Spotify Premium offer, you'll keep your username and primo playlists.

To switch to free Spotify Premium on Spark, you'll need to cancel your payments so that we can pick up your bill. Here's how to do it:

  1. Make sure you've been through the Spark activation journey
  2. Head to www.spotify.co.nz, and log in to your account
  3. Go to Subscription in your navigation menu
  4. Take note of your renewal date
  5. Click CHANGE OR CANCEL.
  6. Click SWITCH TO FREE.
  7. Click YES, CANCEL.
  8. Note: Spotify doesn't know that you're switching to Spotify Premium with Spark, they think you're leaving them. They may ask you a few times if you're sure you want to cancel, which can feel a bit scary. Rest assured, as long as you've been through the activation process at spark.co.nz/getspotify and registered your account with Spark, we'll pick up the tab when your Premium account tries to renew at your normal renewal date, which you noted at step 3 above.

More information on how to cancel available here.

I cancelled my Premium subscription, when will Spark start covering my payments?

Once you've completed the cancellation process you're done; you'll automatically switch to the new Spotify Premium subscription that comes free with your Spark mobile plan when your current paid subscription ends.

As your existing Premium subscription is pre-paid your account will keep its Premium status until your normal monthly renewal date. When your Premium account tries to renew at your renewal date, Spotify will recognise you've registered through Spark and your Premium Subscription will continue, on us.

You can check this under Subscription in your Spotify account information.

How can I check if I'm still getting Spotify Premium and if Spark is covering my payments?

If you're unsure about who manages your subscription, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your account page.
  2. Click Subscription in the menu on the left. There you can see who manages your subscription. If Spark is paying for your Premium, Spotify will state: “Your subscription is associated with our partner: Spark New Zealand”, under this section.

How is streaming music different from downloading?

Online music streaming is one of the latest ways to listen to music over the internet, but instead of owning the music, you access it. It's like having a massive online music library (with over 30 million songs) at your fingertips, on demand, with no download or buffering times. Whenever you're online, you can listen to your music on your desktop, mobile or tablet devices. Spotify also allows you to sync your music in Offline Mode, so you don't need to be connected to the internet to stream.

Will streaming music on my Spotify Premium app use the data included in my plan?

Yes - streaming music will use the data included in your plan. An hour of streaming uses approximately 1MB/minute - that's about 17 hours of music per GB of data.

Some Data tips and tricks.

If you're streaming from your mobile with 3G/4G, set the audio quality to Normal. Navigate to Settings in your mobile Spotify app, and hit Music Quality to select your quality preference.

Play music while on WiFi to save on streaming data

Download/Sync your music offline when you have a WiFi connection, then listen in offline mode when WiFi isn't available: Watch How to listen to Spotify music offline

Can I get Spotify Premium on my other devices?

Yes. Spotify Premium can be accessed on tablets, PCs, Macs and many smart TVs. Simply download the app and log in with your Spotify details. Only one device at a time can stream content. When you log in, you'll be prompted to make that the main device.

You can also check out Spotify for a list of supported devices and compatibility.

Can I use Spotify Premium on any phone?

Spark cannot guarantee that Spotify will be compatible with all smartphones and you are advised to check your smartphone's compatibility with Spotify before you purchase it. Your phone will need to connect to 4G, 3G or WiFi network to stream Spotify. Check your phone's full specifications if you are unsure about your internet connection.

If you have a feature phone and have an eligible plan, you can still use it on another device, visit Spotify for a list of supported devices and compatibility
