This error usually occurs when connecting to internet using a dial-up connection. Although, it can also occur when connecting to the internet using Broadband and Mobile Broadband too. Error 692 can be caused by either a corrupt or incorrectly installed modem driver or a hardware fault.
If you are on a dial-up connection it can also occur if the phone line gives a non-standard dial tone such as Call Minder, when trying to connect to the internet. If you have Call minder as a first step try adding two commas before the dial-up number on your computer and seeing if the error goes away.
Here are some other things you can try to solve error 692:
Try unplugging everything from all the jackpoints in your house, garage and any sleep-outs. This includes:
Once you have unplugged everything wait for 30 seconds. Start by plugging a standard phone handset back into the phone socket without any extension leads, double adaptors or broadband filters attached and test if Error 692 goes away. If you unplugged a medical alarm make sure you have plugged it back in.
Restart your PC if the error has just occurred and your PC hasn't already been restarted
Make sure there is no fax software running in the background of your computer as sometimes this software can cause error 692
Recreate the dialler by deleting your dial-up connection and then creating a new dial-up connection
