Spark will be launching New Zealand’s first mobile plan designed for kids, alongside a dedicated education hub, to better support parents when they choose to introduce their children to the digital world.

Over the past year, we've collaborated with independent experts and conducted extensive research with over 500 parents to understand how to best support families in introducing mobile phones to their children. What we found is, parents value the ability to keep in touch with their children via a mobile phone – whether they’re catching the bus, staying with relatives or friends, or running late – but are equally concerned about keeping them safe online.

Spark's Kids Plan features include:

  • Can be added to a parent’s account – meaning the parent has full oversight of the plan and its usage;
  • The plan will not receive promotional marketing text messages from Spark.
  • Parents manage the kids account and kids are prevented from buying extras or replying to short codes that charge, which enables parents to manage surprise extra costs;
  • New parental feature, allowing parents to manage the plan by deciding how much data is allocated to the child and when (starting at 1GB, with a maximum of 2GB), and controlling whether data top ups are added or not;
  • The data allowance allows children to be able to use applications that require small amounts of data, such as bus apps and Find My iPhone, but doesn’t provide enough for high levels of online or social media use.
