Set up Nokia WiFi Beacon

Learn how to set up your Nokia WiFi Beacon to expand the WiFi coverage in your house or office.

You have your Nokia WiFi Beacon and now you can set it up to help bring stronger WiFi to more rooms in your home or office. Follow this guide to get started so that you can enjoy a stronger and more reliable WiFi connection in your home or office. The setup process works the same for both the Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1 and Beacon 4.

Compatibility information

The Nokia WiFi Beacon is compatible with most Spark and Nokia modems and you'll need at least two beacons to get started. If you're using a Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 7 modem, only one Nokia WiFi Beacon is required to create your mesh network. If you already have a Spark Smart Mesh paired with your modem, you won't be able to add the Nokia WiFi Beacon to further extend your WiFi coverage. Both the Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1 and Beacon 4 can be used together within the same network.

Download the Nokia WiFi App (recommended)

The app will guide you step by step and help you find the best place for each beacon. Once you've downloaded the Nokia WiFi app, you can scan the QR code on the bottom of the beacon and follow the instructions to set up your Nokia WiFi Beacon.

Set up the Nokia WiFi Beacon

If you have a Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 7 modem Go to pairing the second beacon.

  1. Place your first beacon near your modem and plug it in.
  2. Turn on the beacon, it may take up to five minutes to boot. You can continue to the next step while you wait.
  3. Use the ethernet cable to connect internet to the beacon from your modem:
    • One end goes into a LAN port on the modem.
    • The other end into the WAN port on the back of the beacon.
  4. Wait for the LED to turn blue to show it has paired. If the LED is red, check the ethernet cables are plugged in correctly.
  5. Connect your device using the WiFi name and password printed on the sticker under the beacon.
  6. Launch the Nokia WiFi app
    • Follow the steps in the app to finish setting up the WiFi network. This is where you can change the WiFi name and password.

Pairing the second beacon

To pair the second beacon or additional beacons, it is recommended to use the Nokia WiFi app as it guides you through each step, otherwise you can use an ethernet cable to pair the beacons.

Option A - Wireless paring with Nokia WiFi app (recommended)

  1. Place the second beacon near the first beacon, as long as it's within WiFi range.
  2. Plug it into power and turn on. It may take up to five minutes to boot.
  3. In the Nokia app, go to WiFi points.
  4. Tap “Add WiFi point”.
  5. Follow the on-screen steps to pair the new beacon.
  6. When LED shows solid blue the pairing is complete.

Option B - Ethernet backhaul, app not required

  1. Place the second beacon next to the first beacon and plug in the power plug.
  2. Turn the second beacon on. It may take up to five minutes to boot, you can continue to the next step while you wait.
  3. Use an ethernet cable to connect the beacons:
    • One end goes into a LAN port of the first beacon (that's already connected to the internet).
    • The other end into the WAN port on the second beacon.
    • Once the second beacon detects the first beacon, it will start syncing automatically.
  4. Wait for the LED on the second beacon to turn solid blue, to show it has finished pairing.
  5. Unplug and move the second beacon into another room to extend the coverage. Optimal placement is halfway between the first beacon and the weak signal area.

Disable modem WiFi

Once your beacons are set up, turn off the WiFi from your modem so that the beacon can manage your network and helps to give you better performance. Otherwise, your devices may connect to the wrong WiFi source. If you have a Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 7 modem, you will need to keep the modems WiFi enabled.

  • Open the modem’s settings page in any web browser (default address and login is usually on a sticker under the modem).
  • Find WiFi/Wireless settings and choose Disable/Off.

If you have devices already connected to your Spark modem, you can save time by changing the beacon’s WiFi name and password to match your modem. You can do this in the Nokia WiFi app so you don’t have to reconnect every device.

Connect your devices to WiFi

If you’ve set the Nokia WiFi Beacon to match your modem’s name and password using the Nokia WiFi app, your devices will connect automatically. If not, use the name and password printed on the bottom of the beacon to connect your devices.

To add a new device:

  1. Turn on WiFi on your device.
  2. Open your device's WiFi menu.
  3. Look for and select your WiFi network name.
  4. Enter the WiFi password to connect.

Things to know

  • Keep the first beacon connected to the modem using the ethernet cable to ensure internet access.
  • Place the second beacon halfway between the modem and the furthest room, within the WiFi coverage of your modem.
  • Keep the beacons away from large metal objects.
  • It works best when elevated rather than near the floor.
  • Check it's not obstructed by objects in front of it.
  • Solid white - The beacon is turning on.
  • Solid blue - The beacon is paired.
  • Red - The beacon doesn't have internet or isn't paired, check cables and try to pair again.
  • Yellow - The beacon has limited connectivity, move the beacons closer and check the Nokia WiFi app.
  • Flashing yellow - The beacon has a connection or firmware issue, use the Nokia WiFi app to troubleshoot.
  • No light - The beacon is either off or the LED is disabled, check the power adapter and LED settings in Nokia WiFi app.
  • Blinking blue = Beacon is powered on and ready to pair.
  • Solid blue = Beacon is connected.
  • Orange = Beacon is starting up or needs firmware update.
  • Purple = Beacon is trying to connect to the network or another beacon.
  • Red = Beacon cannot connect, move closer or check power and ethernet cable.
  • No light = Beacon is either off or not receiving power.

  • If the Nokia WiFi app won't connect:
    • Make sure that your phone is near the beacon and that Bluetooth is turned on.
    • Check that you are connected to the same WiFi network as the beacon.
    • When asked for a username and password for the app, use the details shown on the bottom of the beacon. These may look similar to the WiFi name and password.
  • If you are experiencing WiFi dropouts or slow speeds:
    • Open the app, make sure the mesh has a strong connection and move beacon closer if needed.
    • Check that your devices are connected to the Nokia WiFi Beacon WiFi and not the modem's WiFi. You can disable the modems WiFi to prevent devices connecting to it.
  • If you have a slow wired device:
    • Check the ethernet cables and make sure you are using the included ethernet cable or a high-speed ethernet cable. If it's still slow try a different port.
  • If there is a mesh connectivity issue:
    • Open app to check backhaul / MLO status (connection between the first beacon and the modem). You may need to pair the beacon again.
