Set up Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1

Learn how to set up your Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1 to expand the WiFi coverage in your house or office.

To set up your network, you’ll need at least two Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1 units, each box includes two beacon units. You can use up to six units in a single network to cover a large or multi-storey house. The Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1 works by extending your modem's WiFi connection.

Compatibility information

The Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1 is compatible with all Spark and Nokia modems. However, if you already have a Spark Smart Mesh paired with your modem, you won't be able to add the Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1 to further extend your WiFi coverage.

Download the Nokia WiFi App (recommended)

Scan the QR code on the bottom of the beacon and follow the instructions to set up the Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1.

The app guides you to set up each beacon, helping you find the best spot and test signal strength to make sure you’ve got good coverage. It also checks if the second beacon has a strong connection to the first.

Set up with a Spark modem

It's recommended to use the Nokia WiFi app to set up and change the network settings of the beacon.

  1. Plug the first beacon into a power point next to your modem.
  2. Use the ethernet cable to connect the beacon to your modem:
    • One end goes into a LAN port on the modem.
    • The other end into the WAN port on the back of the beacon.
  3. Turn off the WiFi on your modem, allowing the beacon to manage your network instead:
    • Open the modem’s settings page in a web browser (address and login are usually on a sticker under the modem).
    • Find WiFi/Wireless settings and choose Disable/Off.
  4. Choose a WiFi password option:
    • In the Nokia WiFi app, when asked for a WiFi name and password, enter the same name and password as your modem.
    • Or use the default WiFi name and password printed on the sticker under the beacon.

If you have devices connected to your Spark modem, it's recommended to change the WiFi name and password of the beacon to match the modem. You can set this in the Nokia WiFi app to avoid reconnecting each device.

Adding the second beacon

To pair the second beacon or additional units:

  1. Once you have set up your first beacon, plug in the power to the second beacon
  2. Use an ethernet cable to connect the beacons:
    • One end goes into a LAN port of the first beacon (that is already connected to the internet).
    • The other end into the WAN port on the second beacon.
  3. Wait a few minutes. Once the second beacon detects the first, it will start syncing automatically.
  4. When the LED on the second beacon turns solid blue, it has now finished pairing.
  5. Move the second beacon into another room within WiFi range to extend the coverage.

Both beacons are now set up to give you better WiFi coverage.

Connect your devices to WiFi

If you’ve set the Nokia WiFi Beacon 3.1 to match your modem’s name and password using the Nokia WiFi app, your devices will connect automatically. If not, use the name and password printed on the bottom of the beacon to connect your devices.

To add a new device:

  1. Turn on WiFi on your device.
  2. Open your device's WiFi menu.
  3. Look for and select your WiFi network name.
  4. Enter the WiFi password to connect.

Things to know

  • Keep the first beacon connected to the modem using the ethernet cable to ensure internet access.
  • Place the second beacon halfway between the modem and the furthest room, within the WiFi coverage of your modem.
  • Keep the beacons away from large metal objects.
  • It works best when elevated rather than near the floor.
  • Check it's not obstructed by objects in front of it.
  • Blinking blue = Beacon is powered on and ready to pair.
  • Solid blue = Beacon is connected.
  • Orange = Beacon is starting up or needs firmware update.
  • Purple = Beacon is trying to connect to the network or another beacon.
  • Red = Beacon cannot connect, move closer or check power and ethernet cable.
  • No light = Beacon is either off or not receiving power.

  • Press and hold the reset button on the beacon for 10–15 seconds. Use a SIM tool or something similar to reach the button inside the small hole.
  • Once the lights are flashing, release the button.
  • You can start the set up again.
  • If there's no internet after setup, turn off your modem, wait two minutes, then turn it back on. Next, turn off the beacon and turn it back on.
  • If devices connect but there is no internet, make sure the beacon is properly connected to the modem, and that there is an active internet connection. To check, connect a laptop directly to the modem using an ethernet cable.
  • If your modem uses a PPPoE login, make sure the beacon isn’t trying to handle PPPoE unless it’s been set up to do so.
  • If your beacon has slow speeds, try moving it closer to the modem or use ethernet backhaul. Avoid placing the beacon near thick walls, microwaves, baby monitors or big metal objects.
  • Update your beacon’s firmware through the Nokia app when asked, as this can help resolve stability and performance issues.
  • If WPS fails, try setting up the beacon manually using the Nokia WiFi app.
  • If the Nokia WiFi app won't connect, make sure that your phone is near the beacon and that Bluetooth is turned on.
