When you sign up for Unplan, we both agree to these Plan Terms. That includes any updates made along the way. Remember, it’s also a good idea to be across the General Terms – these apply to everyone using Spark services for personal use. The Fixed Line Terms apply to you too.

Service Overview

Service Description

  1. Unplan is a broadband plan that flexes with you. Based on your usage each month, you’re automatically moved between three price tiers. This means you have the freedom to use more data when you want to, and to save money when you use less data.
  2. With Unplan, you can choose to add a landline. You can also choose to upgrade to Unplan Netflix.
  3. On Unplan over fibre, you can choose the speed of your service (subject to availability):
    • Fibre BASIC
    • Fibre 100
    • Fibre Max

The default speed is normally Fibre 100, depending on your location. If you’d like faster speeds, you can upgrade to alternative fibre speeds. FibreBASIC is not available in Kaipara and Whangarei. View plans and pricing schedule


  1. Unplan and Unplan Netflix is not available in all areas and eligibility criteria applies. Take a look at the address checker to see what is available to you. Check your address
  2. Unplan over fibre is only offered in areas where the Ultra Fast Broadband network is available.
  3. If you are eligible for Unplan, Spark will select fibre as the most appropriate technology for you to use Unplan based on:
    1. the network technologies available at your address; and
    2. the usage patterns you indicate to us during the setup of the Unplan or Unplan Netflix service at your address.
  4. If either of the factors listed above changes during the term of your agreement, we may change your broadband (at our absolute discretion) to an alternative technology or a new plan.

Service Charge

  1. The monthly price for each type of Unplan over fibre is set out below and on our broadband plans and pricing schedule. View the plans and pricing schedule
  2. Your monthly charges will vary depending on how much data you’ve used. So, whenever we invoice you for Unplan, it’ll be for the previous month’s usage.

* Fibre BASIC has a different speed depending on your Local Fibre Company. Addresses in Hamilton, Whanganui, New Plymouth, Tokoroa, Hawera, Cambridge, Tauranga, Te Awamutu and Christchurch will have a Fibre service with the ability to deliver speeds up to 30Mbps downstream and 10Mbps upstream. The rest of NZ will have a service able to deliver up to 50Mbps downstream and 10Mbps upst. Fibre BASIC is not available in Kaipara and Whangarei.

Set Up Charge

  1. Set up charges may include: 
    • A one-off non-standard fibre installation charge, if you need to have fibre installed and your requirements aren’t standard. You can read more about this in our Fixed Line Terms.
    • If you sign up to Unplan from 16 November 2020, your plan doesn't include a modem. You can purchase one from Spark with a one-off payment or on Spark's interest free payments. Alternatively, you can choose to use your own modem.
    • A one-off $14.95 modem postage fee if we need to send you a new modem.

Access Type

  1. Your access type will be fibre. More information about access types and speeds can be found on the NZ Telecommunications Forum website.

Other Information

Minimum Contract Period

  1. If you sign up to Unplan before 16 November 2020 you will have a 12-month minimum term. If you sign up from 16 November 2020, you will be on an open term.

Early Termination Fee

  1. If you have a 12 month minimum term and you terminate your plan before the end of this period, you may need to pay an early termination fee (as set out in our General Terms). The early termination fee is:
    • For Unplan over fibre, it’s $149; or
    • For Unplan Netflix plans, it’s $199. 

If you're on an open term and you terminate your plan before the end of any modem interest free term, you will need to pay the outstanding interest free payments when your plan ends.

Notice period (cancellation)

  1. You’ll need to give us 30 days’ notice to end your Plan. This is covered in more detail in our General Terms.

Traffic Management

  1. We might have to pause, restrict, end or slow performance of your service if it’s necessary for us to protect our networks or manage traffic over our networks. We’ve covered this at clause 6.6 of our General Terms.
  2. On Unplan Fibre and Unplan Netflix Fibre, the amount of data you can use isn’t capped (though you’ll be charged the highest price tier if you use in excess of 120GB a month).

Fair Use

  1. You need to use our services fairly – we’ve set out our rules on this at clause 2.6 of our General Terms.  


Effects on Other Services

  1. Your modem requires mains power. So, if there’s a power cut your broadband service won’t be available and you won’t be able to use it to contact emergency services. Make sure you have a charged mobile phone handy to use in a power cut in case of emergency. If you have existing services you’re planning to use with your broadband connection, you should check with the provider of those services to make sure they’ll work. This could include medical alerts, monitored home alarms, and interactive features of Sky TV.
  2. If you want to make calls from a landline (including 111 calls), you’ll need to sign up for Unplan with a landline. Your landline will run over fibre.
  3. If you’ve ordered Unplan with a landline, it’s possible your existing landline will be disconnected for a few hours when your Unplan connection is set up.

Other Charges

  1. If you choose to have a landline, from the start of your Unplan service all your national and international calls will be provided and invoiced by Spark. Local calls are free. We charge for national, international and mobile calls, but have a range of calling plans to suit most people.

  1. When you sign up to Unplan Netflix Fibre, you'll receive:
    1. Netflix Standard (HD) Streaming Plan for the duration of your Unplan Netflix service. Netflix Standard means the Netflix Standard (HD) Streaming Plan is included. This means you can stream TV shows and movies on two devices at the same time and in HD.
